Currently data centers operate in a mode called "always-on", meaning that all servers, all equipment, cooling, is running 24x7, 365 days, irrespective of the need or demand. Furthermore, 30% of all servers are not even used and utilization "rarely exceeds 6%". Software Defined Management for data centers will change that and reduce power cost for data centers by over 50%.
This paper is about data center capacity planning and the impact from using actual power consumption vs nameplate or derated nameplate values. The paper, published by Tier44, was written by Val Sokolov, who managed R&D data centers operations and capacity planning at Brocade and VMware and is currently with eBay.
